Odd that the battery nearest to the Cree LED will overheat. But not likely due to excessive RFI, as all have to be certified to be within FCC limits. If only single cells, each should be identical in brand and rating. If a cell pack, same applies. Different amperage/voltage ratings of batteries can cause problems. But there are notes that the bulb could cause the light to become uncomfortably warm after several minutes use at high setting.

I recently modified my Petzl Zoom again: put an E10 (mini screw-base) LED instead of the Krypton bulb and mated it to a small 6v, 1.4 amp lead-acid battery, trying to get around the battery overheating mentioned in previous posts. Not bad results and I like the fact it is rechargable. I'm going to try a 9v next, which will be lighter but probably not as long lasting. I'm thinking about trying rechargeable 9 volts, maybe in parallel pairs or even just swapping them as needed.

I do like the new dimmable headlights. I have a 300 lumen that you can dim by pressing and holding the button. Cool!

The bulb is rated to 9 volts. It isn't as piercing as some other bulbs but I like the Petzl Zoom headlight a lot. And I like the idea of rechargeable batteries that can kick some lumens.

Field test of the new 9v alkaline battery Petzl mod this weekend. It's much lighter than the 6v lead-acid. I do plan to try rechargeable 9s even though the actual voltage is something like 8.4v.

Field test of 9v battery mod, Petzl Zoom headlamp (originally used 4.5v halogen or krypton bulb mated to three AA bateries).

Rig was significantly lighter than the previous lead acid setup and the 9v held up throughout the weekend with normal use. So, if you have an old Petzl Zoom this is a good way to update it.

Use a 9 volt, E10 (Edison mini screw-base) LED bulb. Remove the old battery guts out of the rear holder and solder in a 9v battery snap connector. The 9v will fit inside the housing with no problem.
