The Lehigh Valley RR, a huge mover of anthracite coal opened a small amusement park in 1891 in Harveys Lake, Pa. The park was named Hanson's and closed in 1984. They had pretty neat attractions from what I hear. They had a rollercoaster, a huge boat dock where steamboats that burned anthracite which gave patrons rides on the lake. They had a huge water slide and high dive. This place was quite the rage from the early 1900s to the 1960s. It closed in 1984 and they tore a lot of the park down. There is a cool white steel structure that was part of the roller coaster. This is where the Lehigh Valley RR went under the roller coaster! The train went right through the park. Go to Harveyslake.org and check for yourself, there's tons of information there and also check out http://www.defunctparks.com/parks/PA/hansons/index.htm if you're interested.
They are tearing down the rest of the former park down this year most likely. They are going to put in 34 condos and maybe 100+ in time. A lot of people including myself are furious that they are ruining the site and that there will be more development here. _________________ Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper. This place is pretty cool, my friends uncle owns(ed) this park, but they recently sold it, we always go swimming on his dock right there at Hansons, all the old pavilionsa and cabins are still back there too, the inside of the buildings are pretty cool to. |
