Just got back from the Sultan Mine near Goodsprings, NV. This is about 40 miles south of Las Vegas.

Nice photo montage. Those old mine timbers could be on the verge of disintegration, or 'dry-rot', and not sustain loads. While they look like they can support a person's weight, I would not trust them.. especially ladders! The old-fashioned "knock test" with a small hammer will reveal their status. And nails can revert back to their natural state.. iron oxide.
But still very interesting. When was the last time it was active?

Forgot to add..
Found this link about several mines in the Nevada area, including the Sultan mine. It appears it has been unproductive since the mid-1920s. http://www.mindat.org/loc-3888.html

I'm guessing this mine went back close to 1000' maybe more its hard to say. We noticed there were more levels, but with out any climbing gear or rope expedience we weren't willing to try most of the old ladders. We did find one area that opened up big enough to fit a house in ( see pic 24 ) This is only the 3rd mine I've been in, can't wait for # 4

I'll be in Vegas 12/27 to 1/3, and I want to stay a few more days to check out mines. Will either of you be around?

Photos from my trip to this mine:

Album:
http://www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=1070772612

The mountain is like swiss cheese. HUGE stoped out areas, bigger than I have ever seen. four levels, three accessed by the 175' deep slope. There are higher workings, but we did not have the time to get there. We spent over 4-5 hours in the mine.

Special thanks to Joanne for showing us this gem, a care package will be on its way!

Whoa Chris, that slope looks like a death drop. How far down did the mine go?

175'. I was about 10' from the end of the rope, and i figure we used about 15' to tie off to the two anchors. (I have a 200' length of rope)

I think the bottom of the stope is below the bottom of the inclined shaft and the top of the stope is above the collar of the inclined shaft. I think it may be 225 to 250 tall from bottom to top. We didn't have time to climb down into the stope and explore the far side. I've not been in all that many mines, but this is the largest stope that I've seen.
